Goodwood 'bouncing' for Family Raceday

Goodwood ‘bouncing’ for Family Raceday in association with the NSPCC

With its popular Family Raceday around the corner, Goodwood Racecourse staged a children’s inflatable horse race for the first time in its illustrious, 214-year history. Supporting the NSPCC, three young racegoers took to the turf on inflatable ‘horsey hoppers,’ for a sprint over a quarter of a furlong. In a closely fought and very bouncy battle, it was 9-year-old Rufus Gilbert-Burke who was first past the post, winning by a nose.

Goodwood’s Family Raceday in association with the NSPCC takes place on Sunday 5 June and provides an opportunity to learn about the sport of horseracing. Children are invited to tour the jockey’s weighing room and try on the lightweight silks, while families can take a guided walk with the clerk of the course. There are also opportunities to meet a racehorse to appreciate the size and power of these amazing animals, visit the race start as the runners burst from the stalls, watch farrier demonstrations and put questions to a vet. Racegoers can even have a go at racing themselves by riding a finish on a mechanical horse. And if they still have the energy, there is even a complimentary fairground to enjoy.

About the NSPCC

The NSPCC is the only children’s charity fighting to end child abuse in the UK and Channel Islands.  Using voluntary donations, which make up more than 90 per cent of funding, the charity helps children who’ve been abused to rebuild their lives, protects children at risk, and finds the best ways of preventing child abuse from ever happening. So when a child needs a helping hand, they’ll be there. When parents are finding it tough, they’ll help. When laws need to change, or governments need to do more, they won’t give up until things improve.

The NSPCC’s ChildLine service provides a safe, confidential place for children with no one else to turn to, whatever their worry, whenever they need help. Children can contact ChildLine 24 hours a day, 365 days a year on 0800 1111 or by visiting www.childline.org.uk

Their free helpline provides adults with a place they can get advice and support, share their concerns about a child or get general information about child protection. Adults can contact the helpline 24 hours a day, 365 days a year on 0808 800 5000, by texting 88858 or visiting www.nspcc.org.uk
